Se trata de una obra que se concibió tras contemplar, que desde hace 22 años no se había publicado ninguna obra en la que se reflejara la situación de la psiquiatría española hasta nuestros días. En estos 22 años esta disciplina ha crecido extraordinariamente, y en el momento actual está situada en un excelente lugar en el contexto internacional.
Esta obra, en la que han colaborado 243 autores, se compone de dos tomos divididos en grandes secciones, que se detallan a continuación:
La primera (A), corresponde a generalidades, en la que se incluyen ocho temas básicos de la psiquiatría, sobre historia, concepto de enfermedad mental, etiología en psiquiatría y psiquiatría basada en pruebas. La segunda (B) trata de los fundamentos de la psiquiatría, compuesta por doce capítulos de bases biológicas, siete de bases psicosociales y dos de epidemiología. La tercera gran sección (C) de esta obra corresponde a la evaluación en psiquiatría, integrada por nueve capítulos que analizan la entrevista, la personalidad, la exploración del estado. La cuarta (D) se refiere a la clasificación, formada por dos capítulos, uno referido a la historia de las clasificaciones y el otro a las clasificaciones actuales. (...)
